Geographical Information System (GIS) and Autonomous Robots

Geographical Information System (GIS) and Autonomous Robots

Before starting the subject, it would be better to talk about the data and the addition of location information to this data. Today, information that we call data can be obtained from many different objects. If this data is collected and stored in a certain order, a data infrastructure can be created. Spatial data, on the other hand, is formed by associating 2-dimensional (x, y) and 3-dimensional (x, y, z) location information obtained by various methods (satellite, land surveys, etc.) with the data. In the spatial data infrastructure, standards can be established for the storage and sharing of data and spatial data in a certain order. The reason for mentioning this information is that the vehicles used in autonomous systems and using location information interactively can actually do this with the help of a system called Geographic Information Systems. GIS (Geographic Information Systems), social, economic, environmental etc. on the world. It is the whole of hardware, software, personnel, geographical data and methods that fulfill the functions of collecting, storing, processing, managing, spatial analysis, querying and presenting spatial data in decision-making processes for the solution of problems. Machine learning, which is created as a result of integrating GIS and artificial intelligence, is called spatial intelligence (GeoAI). Today, studies based on location-based autonomous robots are carried out with the mapping method created with spatial intelligence. With this method, it can be ensured that the created robot perceives its location, acts accordingly, fulfills the given task, and returns to the desired or current location. Today, there are many different studies on this subject and I will share a few of them with you.

A GIS Application for UAV Flight Planning

Today, unmanned aerial vehicles can fly autonomously on the desired route without human support and return to the place where they took off when their mission is over or when they encounter any adverse conditions. Since automatic flight is performed, these vehicles may need to draw a safe route according to building heights in close flight. For this, building heights were calculated with a UAV equipped with the necessary sensors and height maps were created with the help of a program. In the future, this application can be expanded and close-up flights can be made safer for autonomous flying vehicles.

Detection of Agricultural Products by Remote Sensing

In our technological age, it is possible to examine the images obtained from the satellite with remote sensing and make inferences accordingly. To briefly explain the method used here;

  • Radiation is sent from the satellite at different frequencies
  • The emitted rays hit the objects in the area
  • These objects absorb a certain amount of these radiations and scatter a certain amount back, depending on their structure and color.
  • Backscattered rays are collected by the satellite
  • If these objects match the items with the previously obtained scatterplot, what these objects are can be distinguished.

This study was carried out to detect and classify the agricultural products grown in the Eastern Black Sea region determined by processing the satellite images obtained by remote sensing of the region. In the future, with this technology, by integrating snapshots into autonomous vehicles or uploading orthophotos, it can be ensured that any regularly scattering object can be analyzed and reported by the vehicle, or it can act according to a situation caused by the object.

Orbiba Robotics olarak birçok teknoloji ve fikir içeren bu çalışmalardan esinlenerek yapacağımız projelerde günümüzde kullanılan ve gelecekte kullanılabilecek teknolojilerin önümüze ışık tutmasını sağlamak,  kullanıcının bu teknolojileri günlük yaşamına dahil edebilmesini ve organik yaşamda otonom teknolojileri kullanarak her evin doğal besin ihtiyacını karşılamayı hedefliyoruz.

As Orbiba Robotics we inspire from these ideas and technologies which are being used today and might be used in the future, also we aim to enable the users to incorporate these technologies into their daily life and to meet the natural nutritional needs of every home by using autonomous technologies in organic life.
